Seasonal cooking ideas for a range cooker

Range cookers aren’t just stylish home accessories; they are incredibly versatile pieces of machinery that can transform the way you cook throughout the year. In our latest blog, we take a look at some of the ways they can improve your cooking.

The winter months are traditionally a very busy time for our kitchens and the types of food being rustled-up can vary greatly. While December is a month of indulgence, where our diets tend to go out the window, January is for many a month of refinement and healthy eating. Luckily, range cookers are well suited to both kinds of cooking.

Where many Christmas chefs will spend Christmas morning incredibly stressed and trying in vain to multi-task, a range cooker has so much extra space that cooking your turkey and all the added trimmings becomes a doddle. The added bonus of a warming oven means that you can gently cook your turkey over night.

If you’re feeling like you over-indulged in December but are still in need of some winter warmth then making the most of seasonal winter vegetables like artichokes and parsnips by throwing them in a hearty broth can be a great move.

Assuming that you’ve given your kitchen its annual spring clean then you’ll no doubt be ready to make some mess again! Light dishes like quiches are well suited to range cookers, as you don’t have to ‘blind cook’ them. By cooking on the floor of your roasting oven, you can heat both the pastry and the filling simultaneously. Spring is a good time for making chutneys too; rhubarb is in season at this time of year and you can give it an extra kick by adding some ginger and honey.

Pulled pork is a summer favourite for lots of us and as your range cooker is always on, you can place your seasoned pork into the oven and leave it while you enjoy the good weather outside. Serve in wraps with lettuce and homemade coleslaw if you really want to impress your guests.

The summer doesn’t always bring sunshine though, and as a back-up plan you could always serve traditional fish and chips to your party guests. Mix together some flour, lager and a sprinkle of salt if you want to make the perfect beer batter.

This is a great time of year to bake and use up the last of your summer fruits and also have a go at a classic British favourite – pie & chips. You can use your simmering oven to gently cook your pie filling, cover the top with pastry and oven bake until it rises nicely. For something different why not have a go at an American favourite – pumpkin pie, and use the leftovers to make your house look spooky in time for Halloween!

The variety and versatility that a range oven can provide will enable you to cook great dishes all year long. For tips and advice on choosing the right appliance, take a look at our helpful guide, here.
