Stay safe from fire

The week of the 7th – 13th September is Fire Safety Week.

W & H Supplies are proud to be supporting the annual ‘Fire Kills’ chimney safety week which begins on Monday 7th September and aims to raise awareness about the importance of safe usage and regular maintenance of chimneys.

clip_image001During 2013/14 the fire brigade attended over 7,000 chimney fires across England and Wales, many of which they claim could have easily been prevented. In an effort to drive this number down the ‘Fire Kills’ campaign aims to educate home owners on how they can safely operate their heating appliances without risking the safety of themselves and others.

The campaign also aims to educate homeowners about the signs of a chimney fire which include low rumbling or roaring noises as well as cracking and popping sounds.

Here are a few practices in relation to chimney safety that you should follow:

· Make sure your appliances are correctly sized and fitted by an approved GAS SAFE installer

· Look out for signs of a bird nest or other blockages of your chimney

· Only burn approved fuels and wood that is properly seasoned

· Be sure to have your chimney swept regularly by approved sweeps

· Install carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms and test them once a week to be safe

You can find more information throughout our website about how to safely heat your home for you and your family, and we will be sharing related updates throughout the week on our Twitter and Facebook profiles.
